Championship reveal showcases exactly where West Brom are going wrong: Spoiler, it can’t be fixed

West Brom’s issues this season are far more deep-rooted than many have come to realise.

The Baggies are back in action on Saturday as they prepare to face Sheffield United, in a game that could have major consequences come the end of the season.

Oxford United’s win on Friday night has pushed Albion into the bottom three alongside Leicester and Sheffield Wednesday.

James Morrison is the man tasked with keeping West Brom in the Championship, but the latest reveal showcases why it may take a miracle for him to achieve it.

West Brom aren’t just underperforming, they’re severely underperforming

Perhaps you don’t need stats to realise it, but West Brom are heading to League One.

Whether it be the manager, the chairman, the atmosphere or the lack of quality, there are several reasons behind it, but this focuses entirely on the latter.

As per Opta, West Brom are actually ninth in the expected Championship table, which factors in xG for and against to create an expected points tally, of which the Baggies are underperforming by 15.

Albion have scored 6.7 fewer goals than their xG would be expected to result in, while having conceded a worrying 15.1 more than they have been expected to.

And that all comes down to a severe lack of quality in the squad.

Ryan Mason and Eric Ramsay have both had their parts to play in this regression, but the stats showcase that Albion have been doing the right things tactically, but have been lacking the quality to actually execute their plan effectively.

Where does James Morrison go from here?

West Brom confirmed that Morrison will be in charge until the end of the season at the very least, and he is going to have to somehow find a way to get results.

Albion are yet to win a game in 2026, showcasing just how severe their struggles have actually been.

With Mikey Johnston looking likely to miss the rest of the season, other senior members of the squad are really going to have to step up to the occasion and showcase why they are playing in the Championship.

Should they fail to do so, then it’s fair to say that their playing careers in the second division will be halted come the end of May.
