James Morrison surely given new formula after what happened in Sheffield United vs West Brom
Jayson Molumby and Ousmane Diakite did themselves proud in West Brom’s 1-1 draw with Sheffield United on Saturday.
The Baggies slipped into the relegation zone before the match, but fought well and were perhaps unlucky not to come away with all three points.
Alex Mowatt has been ever-present in midfield this season, but he was dropped for Diakite after producing a woeful display in last Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Oxford United.
James Morrison‘s side are now winless in 15 Championship away games, although there are a lot of positives to take from the match at Bramall Lane, most notably how the Mali international performed alongside Molumby.

Jayson Molumby and Ousmane Diakite have to start every game together
It’s clear Molumby‘s disciplinary record doesn’t make for great reading, and he has often let his side down this season.
His red card against Coventry in November essentially cost West Brom all three points, and it was thought that there was no way back for him in B71.
However, despite West Brom’s winless run on the road, the Republic of Ireland international was a standout in the centre of the park.
| Stat | Molumby |
| Minutes played | 90′ |
| Ground duels won | 50% |
| Recoveries | 10 |
| Tackles | 3 |
| Touches | 57 |
According to Sofascore, he registered a pass accuracy of 82 per cent, and he looked assured throughout the 90 minutes against the Blades.
Diakite definitely brought the best out of Molumby, winning 75 of his aerial duels and providing more of a physical presence alongside him.
Morrison will clearly see value from Saturday’s performance, and it would be a shock if Molumby and Diakite don’t start together for Wednesday’s Championship clash with Southampton at The Hawthorns.
However, this is obviously the worst-case scenario for Mowatt’s future in the starting line-up.
Is Alex Mowatt finished at West Brom?
Mowatt was impressive in the early stages of the campaign, but his form has completely dropped off.
The 30-year-old has made two errors leading to goals this season, which showcases how poor he has been on the ball.
Against Oxford United, he was lacklustre in the centre of the park and displayed little aggression as the Baggies slumped to another defeat on the road.
The improvement with Diakite in the team against Sheffield United was as clear as day, which could leave Mowatt on the bench for the foreseeable future.
And if the Baggies are relegated, then the English midfielder could be heading for the exit door in the summer.
