West Brom surely cannot extend Daryl Dike’s contract after Sheffield United disaster

Daryl Dike is out of contract at West Brom in the summer.

Dike has not had much luck since joining West Brom in 2022, with injuries constantly ruining any chance of him forging a starting role.

The American forward was given a rare start by James Morrison for the 1-1 draw with Sheffield United on 7 March.

He proved why The Hawthorns side cannot give him a new contract with his showing in the Bramall Lane contest.

How did Dike perform in West Brom draw?

Dike had a nightmare performance in the draw, and he was replaced by Jamaldeen Jimoh-Aloba in the 78th minute.

The 25-year-old registered two shots, which gave a total of 0.12 expected goals, according to Sofascore.

Dike completed just 67 per cent of his 15 pass attempts, and was particularly bad in the opposition half, with 55 per cent accuracy there.

He had just 28 touches in the contest, but lost possession 11 times, which is nearly half of the time that he had the ball.

He made a total of six carries, for a total distance of 30.3m, which suggests that he could not take the ball forward for his team very often.

He finished the game with a rating of 5.4 from Sofascore, which was the worst of any players on the pitch after a disaster showing.

Why West Brom cannot extend Dike

It is the right time for both parties to move on, that is pretty clear.

The Baggies attack is woeful, but Dike was supposed to be a physical striker who could cause problems for opposition defenders, and that is just not the case anymore.

The injuries have taken their toll, and he is no longer the player that he was when Albion signed him, and Shilen Patel and Co cannot offer him an extension, they need to be ruthless.

He clearly does not have the attributes to play at the level that is needed if the Baggies are to survive and so he definitely would be no use if they sort it all out and push for play-offs next season.

Both sides should say thank you for the memories and let each other press on in different directions, that much is clear after his display against the Blades.
