Southampton reveal will strike fear into West Brom – here’s why

West Brom are still looking for their first win in 2026 ahead of Wednesday’s meeting with Southampton.

James Morrison‘s side rescued a point away at Sheffield United last time out, after George Campbell made up for an earlier own goal by slamming home from outside the box with seven minutes to play.

That could be a precious point indeed for West Brom come the end of the season, and it remains to be seen whether draws will be enough for them to escape the drop to League One.

However, wins most certainly would be, and there’s no telling what three points against Southampton at The Hawthorns on Wednesday night could do for Albion’s confidence, and chances of survival.

Why West Brom may not be confident of win vs Southampton

Southampton are one of the in-form sides in the Championship at the moment, with the appointment of Tonda Eckert following Will Still’s departure looking like a very shrewd one.

Eckert has got Saints playing the football many people always felt they should/would back in the second tier this season, as they haven’t tasted defeat in all competitions since 17 January.

In fact, Saints have won seven of their last eight games in all competitions, with their latest scalp coming against Fulham in the FA Cup fifth round on Sunday, winning 1-0 at Craven Cottage.

All of this helps to paint the picture of the challenge facing West Brom on Wednesday night, and it doesn’t stop there either, as the history books aren’t favouring an Albion win either.

That’s because in the last 11 meetings between these two sides, Southampton have won nine of them, with one draw and only one Albion win at that time period.

This lone West Brom win came all the way back in April 2021, when a Sam Allardyce-led Baggies team defeated Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Saints side 3-0 in the Premier League at The Hawthorns.

What is Southampton’s away record like this season?

So, with almost everything pointing towards a win for Southampton on Wednesday, can West Brom take confidence from anything Saints related?

Well, Eckert’s side aren’t as strong travellers as they are at home this season, with 30 points picked up at St Mary’s as opposed to 23 on the road.

Six wins, five draws and seven defeats from 18 away games this season point towards an inconsistent Southampton team when on their travels, and so Albion perhaps should look to try and take the game to them.

However, they have scored nine goals from their last three Championship away games, beating Sheffield Wednesday 3-1, Leicester 4-3 and Stoke 2-0 respectively.
