Jayson Molumby shines, Alfie Gilchrist excels in new role – West Brom player ratings vs Southampton

West Brom suffered a late heartbreak against Southampton as the visitors equalised late in the game to draw 1-1.

Jayson Molumby struck the opening goal of the game, as James Morrison’s side headed into the half-time break with a lead to hold onto after a valiant defensive effort.

The second half would be more of the same, as the Saints kept most of the possession at The Hawthorns. The Baggies remained well organised at the back and thwarted any hopes of an equaliser.

That was until added time, when Kyle Larin’s looping header went over Max O’Leary.

Overall, despite the dropped points, Morrison will be delighted with his side’s effort, as West Brom News rates each player’s performance out of 10.

Jayson Molumby silences his critics against Southampton

Over the last few weeks, Molumby has had plenty of negativity come his way from the West Brom supporters.

Molumby’s performance against Coventry sticks out in that regard, but against Southampton, he delivered the goods.

He was quick to react from the corner to give his side the lead, and overall, he kept the ball well, which was needed with the Baggies having little of it. He had a 94 per cent passing accuracy.

His goalscoring was not all that stuck out, though, as the Irishman also tried to create for his teammates. The 26-year-old made one big chance against the Saints as well.

Alfie Gilchrist excels at centre-back

Alfie Gilchrist is best known for his performances at fullback, but against Southampton, the 22-year-old appeared to find his feet in a brand new role.

Morrison entrusted the defender at the heart of his defence, and it proved to be a shrewd decision by the manager.

Gilchrist completed seven clearances, made three interceptions, and his passing was excellent throughout the 90 minutes as well. He ended the game with an 84 per cent accuracy.

Overall, the partnership of Gilchrist and Campbell worked well, and it must certainly be in Morrison’s head to utilise the duo there going forward.

It is a big positive for the Baggies as they head into an important few months in the Championship
