West Brom’s relegation chances shift after Southampton setback

West Brom are now among the favourites to be relegated from the Championship at the end of the season.

James Morrison‘s side are in freefall, failing to win a game since the 2-1 win over Queens Park Rangers on 29 December.

West Brom were denied a crucial three points at The Hawthorns when Southampton scored a late leveller through Cyle Larin on 11 March in a dismal setback.

Albion dropped into the relegation zone as a result of the 1-1 draw, and the Opta Analyst do not rate their chances of getting out highly.

Where are West Brom expected to finish?

Opta’s latest prediction would see Albion relegated when the campaign comes to a conclusion, in a crushing blow.

The Baggies are now expected to finish second bottom of the Championship, with an expected points tally of 47.80.

That gives them a 61.86 per cent of dropping down to League One, with Blackburn Rovers(49.60 per cent), Oxford United (43.92 per cent) and Leicester City (24.20 per cent) all having less chance of relegation.

How West Brom can bounce back from Southampton draw?

While ultimately the result was not what they wanted, the Throstles must take positives from the draw with Tonda Eckert’s side.

They must treat the last nine matches as cup finals, and play on the front foot in all of them, otherwise they will be doomed.

Morrison’s side were great, especially in the second-half, but they failed to double their lead and ultimately paid the price when Larin headed home.

They must learn from that, and take the disappointment and utilise it when they host Hull City on 14 March, as they need to start taking three points as soon as possible.

There were encouraging signs for the Baggies to take, despite taking one point, which felt like a defeat, and they must harness them and do the same going forward.

There is still likely to be plenty of twists and turns in the relegation race and Albion must make sure that they are on the right side of them.

They cannot afford to go down, that would surely put them in a much worse financial position and also worsen the mood within the fanbase, which is already at an all-time low.
