James Morrison has to make Alex Mowatt call for West Brom vs Hull City – here’s why

West Brom must be wondering what they have to do to get a win in the Championship at the moment.

Wednesday night looked to finally be the end of West Brom‘s dismal winless run, as the 90th minute arrived against Southampton with James Morrison’s side leading 1-0.

However, it would be heartbreak once again for Albion, as a looping Cyle Larin header flicked off the underside of the crossbar and into the net in added time at The Hawthorns.

As such, that’s now 13 Championship games without a win for the Baggies, but Morrison was right to be delighted with his team’s performance against the Saints, as they are now starting to show some fighting spirit.

Why Alex Mowatt has to start for West Brom vs Hull

One of the great things about the Championship is that games come thick and fast, meaning your next opportunity to put things right is never far away.

Morrison and his West Brom side will be itching to go again after that Southampton setback, but their tests aren’t getting any easier, with promotion-chasing Hull next on the agenda.

With no such thing as a free hit at this stage of the campaign, Albion must look to turn their recent draws into wins, and to do that against the Tigers, Morrison may need to call upon Alex Mowatt.

The experienced central midfielder has been benched in Albion’s last two Championship games, and with a point picked up from both those matches, Morrison may not be looking to make sweeping changes to his lineup.

However, in the 10 career Championship games Mowatt has played against Hull, he’s never been on the losing side, winning eight and drawing two across his spells with Leeds, Barnsley, Middlesbrough and the Baggies respectively – as detailed by Transfermarkt.

He’s also grabbed a goal and two assists against the Tigers, so if West Brom want to beat Sergej Jakirovic’s side, then Mowatt has proven to be a very lucky charm against them indeed.

Morrison has major selection conundrum vs Hull

Ousmane Diakite and Molumby have been forming a good partnership in central midfield over the last couple of games, and Morrison won’t want to break that up.

4-4-2 has also been working for Albion, seeing them pick up points against the likes of Southampton, Sheffield United and Birmingham respectively in recent weeks.

Therefore, if Morrison is a superstitious coach who places value in omens such as Mowatt’s record against Hull, then finding a way to get him back in the team will be incredibly tough.

4-2-3-1 could be the way to go in that regard, as one of these three could sit behind the other two, whilst still enabling Isaac Price and Jed Wallace to be deployed on the flanks after their strong showings against Saints on Wednesday.
