Jayson Molumby quietly becomes West Brom saviour as excellent stats emerge vs Hull City

Jayson Molumby has completely turned his season around at West Brom.

It’s clear Molumby‘s disciplinary record doesn’t make for great reading, and he has often let his side down this season, particularly under Ryan Mason.

However, despite West Brom‘s poor run of form in 2026, the Republic of Ireland international has stepped up in central midfield.

Particularly alongside Ousmane Diakite, Molumby has been given the licence to be more creative, which is certainly not the case when Alex Mowatt is in the team.

And in West Brom’s phenomenal 3-0 win over Hull City at The Hawthorns on Saturday, Molumby delivered one of his best performances of the campaign.

James Morrison must get a lot of credit for getting a lot out of the midfielder, who is beginning to shine at a time when West Brom need him the most.

Josh Maja, Aune Heggebo and Isaac Price all scored at the weekend, but Molumby was arguably one of the most influential players on the pitch.

According to Sofascore, he registered a pass accuracy of 93 per cent and created three chances against the Tigers.

With 18 passes in the final third, Hull’s players couldn’t get near the 26-year-old, and that has been a recurring theme in recent weeks.

Against Sheffield United at the start of March, Molumby registered a pass accuracy of 82 per cent, and he looked assured throughout the 90 minutes at Bramall Lane.

Given the fact that he has made 154 recoveries over the course of the season, he is versatile in all areas of the pitch, and the Baggies are finally seeing the best of him in B71.

While Molumby’s character and desire must be praised, Morrison’s use of Diakite instead of Mowatt has made a big difference to his form.

How does Ousmane Diakite bring the best out of Molumby?

The Irish midfielder has won only 39.3 per cent of his ground duels and 44.4 per cent of his aerial duels in the Championship this season.

It shows that Molumby hasn’t performed well from a defensive aspect, but that’s where Diakite steps in.

The Mali international has won 55.4 per cent of his ground duels and 59.5 per cent of his aerial duels, which is above average for Championship midfielders this campaign.

It’s clear that they both players balance each other out very well, and if it weren’t for Diakite, Molumby would be reaching his full potential.

As for Mowatt, this is the worst-case scenario for his future, and he could definitely leave B71 in the summer transfer window.
