West Brom have nothing to fear vs Bristol City as Ashton Gate awaits James Morrison’s side
West Brom travel to Ashton Gate to take on Bristol City in the Championship on Saturday, and James Morrison’s men have no reason to be fearful.
Ashton Gate has become notorious for being one of the Championship‘s trickiest and most testing venues to get a result as an away side.
However, that is the task which has been set for Morrison and West Brom on Saturday, as they look to start pulling away from the threat of relegation.
Bristol City beat the Baggies 2-1 in the reverse fixture back on Boxing Day 2025, but Morrison’s men will be hopeful of writing a different story this time around.
Albion ended their 13-game winless run in the league with an emphatic 3-0 victory over Hull City at The Hawthorns last time out, and that should fill them with confidence ahead of their clash with the Robins.

Why West Brom shouldn’t fear Bristol City test
Gerhard Struber’s Bristol City side are in a real mess at the moment, having lost four of their last six Championship games.
Indeed, their last victory came on 24 February in a 2-1 away win at Blackburn Rovers, and since then, they’ve lost to: Watford, Coventry and Leicester, as well as suffering an FA Cup loss to League One Port Vale respectively.
| Stat | Middlesbrough | Bristol City |
| Possession | 69% | 31% |
| Shots | 19 | 4 |
| Expected goals (xG) | 2.72 | 0.40 |
| Goalkeeper saves | 0 | 6 |
Struber’s side did, however, manage to stop the rot somewhat last time out, as they took a 1-1 draw back home with them from their trip to Middlesbrough.
They did so in highly dramatic fashion too, as a 96th-minute header from Adam Randell saw them equalise with seconds to play.
However, Middlesbrough goalkeeper Sol Brynn didn’t make a single save in that game, with the City’s lone shot on target from their four attempts being the goal, and he couldn’t do much about it.
Boro missed numerous golden opportunities to put the game beyond the Robins, with David Strelec missing a gilt-edged one-on-one, whilst Alan Browne also had a golden chance to score from yards out that was somehow kept out.
In short, City can feel extremely lucky that they came away from that game with a point, and when Morrison and his West Brom team inevitably comb through the footage, they won’t be quaking in their boots.

What is Bristol City’s home form like this season?
As aforementioned, Ashton Gate has routinely been a very tough place for opposition sides to take points from in recent years.
Indeed, City only lost three times there in the league last season, and took 46 of their 68 points on home soil in 2024-25.
However, it’s certainly not been a fortress for the Robins in 2025-26, as they’ve already lost eight times there this term, with seven wins and four draws making up their 19 home games played at this point.
They’ve actually lost one fewer matches away from home than at Ashton Gate this season, and so West Brom certainly shouldn’t be fearing their trip to Bristol on Saturday by any means.
