West Brom: James Morrison’s side need four more points to hit 10-year Championship survival mark

West Brom currently sit on 43 points, with 21st-placed teams over the last 10 Championship seasons averaging 47 points.

James Morrison is the toast of The Hawthorns at the moment, with West Brom‘s form drastically improving after his appointment as interim head coach.

The Baggies have won three, drawn two and lost just once during his six games at the helm so far, and are now looking likely to secure their Championship status for 2026-27.

Morrison’s men ran out 1-0 winners over Bristol City on Saturday, in what was a considerably more comfortable afternoon at Ashton Gate for Albion than the scoreline suggests.

As such, the Baggies are now four points above the relegation zone heading into the international break, and will resume their run-in on Good Friday when they host promotion-chasing Wrexham.

How many points West Brom may need to avoid relegation

Dropping into League One would be unthinkable for West Brom, but only up until recent performances, that was looking ever more likely to become reality.

Indeed, Albion certainly aren’t out of the woods just yet, and Morrison won’t be resting on his laurels, but the international break should at least afford him the opportunity to take stock of the turnaround he’s been able to incite.

However, when looking back over how 21st-placed teams have fared in the Championship since the 2015-16 season, the Baggies do potentially already have enough points to survive the drop this term.

Over the last decade, the lowest points tally recorded by a team finishing in 21st was Reading in the 2021-22 campaign, where they stayed up with just 41 points.

But, the next fewest points recorded was 43, which was achieved by Bolton Wanderers in the 2017-18 season.

When adding up all the individual points tallies from each 21st-placed side over the last 10 years, the average points number required to finish above the dotted line is 47, meaning Albion need just four points to reach that.

West Brom shouldn’t fear tough run-in

If anything is going to trip West Brom up in their pursuit of Championship safety this season, it looks likely to be their remaining run-in of games.

Albion to still have to play the likes of Wrexham, Millwall, Watford, and Ipswich respectively, with away trips to Preston, Blackburn and Sheffield Wednesday thrown in there too.

However, when it gets to this stage of the season, form and strength of opposition largely goes out of the window when it comes to who wins and who doesn’t, as it’s more about who can handle the pressure better.

Wrexham, Ipswich, Millwall and Watford all have their own respective automatic and play-off hopes, and West Brom can weaponise the nervousness and pressure on those teams to their advantage.

Therefore, especially now that Morrison is evidently getting a tune out of this group of players, there should be absolutely no fear from West Brom as they head towards a huge Championship run-in.
