West Brom: Isaac Price is biggest beneficiary of James Morrison formation change

West Bromwich Albion’s Isaac Price is beginning to hit form again at a crucial point in the season.

The Baggies are still locked in a battle for survival, but have begun to pick up results under James Morrison, with an ongoing four-match unbeaten run seeing them form a four-point gap to the drop zone.

Following the 2-1 loss against Oxford United in his first match in charge, Morrison switched things up the following week against Sheffield United.

Moving to a 4-4-2 formation, Albion have looked much more comfortable both in and out of possession, and the results have followed this trend, with draws against the Blades and Southampton followed up by wins over Hull and Bristol City.

Midfielder Price struggled for form for months after starting the season fantastically, but has recently been potentially the biggest beneficiary of the tactical shift made by Morrison.

Isaac Price versatility shining under James Morrison

As a player, the Northern Irishman fits into the mould of not necessarily fitting into one position in particular.

In the season’s early days, the versatile midfielder was utilised somewhat as a second striker – seeing him score three in three to open the campaign with his movement in and around the box.

While he has a fantastic right foot, Price does not necessarily possess the creative instincts of a natural number 10, but he is still more than useful.

As Albion’s form continued to dip under Ryan Mason, and subsequently Eric Ramsay, his own form dropped as a result, resulting in a dispute with the travelling Baggies contingent at Portsmouth, who watched their side produce just four shots in a 3-0 defeat.

Though, since Morrison’s switch to a two-pronged attack, the 22-year-old has begun to flourish once again.

Starting on the left in each of Albion’s last four, he has been able to drift inside onto his strong right foot and be the menace both with and without the ball that was seen in the season’s early days.

While he netted his seventh goal of the season in the 3-0 win against Hull, putting in an all-action performance, as demonstrated by his Sofascore graphic below.

West Brom have struggled for inspiration for months, with the Black Country outfit unable to string results together even in matches that they have competed in.

With Price back in form, Morrison now has the difference maker that the club have craved as they fight for survival.

Getting Isaac Price back to form was James Morrison’s biggest task

When it comes to the current crop of Albion players, there are not many, if any, as talented as Price.

Somewhat of a ‘positionless’ footballer, when profiled correctly, he is a Swiss Army Knife in every sense.

His 1,578 touches see him rank highly in the Championship, with 107 of these being in the opposition box.

When this is paired with 784 successful passes, 55 accurate long balls and 54 chances created, he is someone who is just always looking to make something happen when he is on the ball – once again demonstrated by the below graphic from Sofascore, this time for the full campaign.

In front of goal, he has benefitted highly from the switch – allowing him to combine with the two presences of Aune Heggebo and Josh Maja up top, while the non-stop running of Callum Styles from the left-back position allows him to occupy the central zones where he is so dangerous.

He is a huge defensive asset too, with 3.07 defensive contributions per 90, 1.46 tackles and 3.48 recoveries, while he has won the ball in the final third 16 times across the season.

Allowed to drift into the half-spaces and given somewhat of a free role, Price is getting back to his best for West Brom, and this was always going to be one of the most important tasks for Morrison.

The Baggies are now well-placed to go on and secure their survival, and the Northern Irishman will be a big part of that come May.

At just 22, there is a lot of room for growth, and a strong end to the season would showcase just why he needs to be one of the players who Albion need to build around next term.
