West Brom vs Wrexham: Keith Hackett calls for consistency after Callum Styles incident

West Bromwich Albion‘s 2-2 draw with Wrexham saw Callum Styles booked by referee Robert Madley.

The Hungary international was cautioned a minute before George Dobson’s equaliser for the Welsh side as he wasted time from a throw-in to try and maintain the lead.

He held onto the ball for 20 seconds before putting it back in play, and Madley was having none of it at The Hawthorns.

Keith Hackett believes it was the right decision and urged Championship officials to show consistency after the incident on 3 April.

West Brom managed to come away with a vital point, with Styles’ time-wasting attempts ultimately falling short.

Why Styles deserved his yellow card in West Brom draw

Styles has been a consistent performer for West Brom this season, but he fully deserved his punishment, according to the ex-PGMOL chief.

Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, he said: “The yellow card for delaying the restart is within the remit of the match officials.

“The law on timed throw-ins does not come into effect until July.

“Referees operating within the PGMOL need to operate a consistent approach across the competition.”

Is Styles in danger of a ban?

15 yellow cards in a single season will see Styles handed a three-match ban, but it is unlikely that he manages that by the end of the campaign.

He has 11 bookings in the league at the moment, with six matches left, so he would have to pick up four more in that time, when he averages one roughly every three games.

No other Albion player is in danger of being suspended, as the 26-year-old has the most yellow cards in the squad in the division.

Nat Phillips is the next biggest offender, with seven yellows to his name, while Chris Mepham and George Campbell have six.

Alex Mowatt and Ousmane Diakite follow with five, with Isaac Price the next highest, having four bookings to his name.

Therefore, the only way that Albion should have players missing in the final few matches is if they are injured, or pick up a red card.

That will be a huge relief to James Morrison as he looks to keep the Black Country side in the second-tier.
