West Brom to breathe sigh of relief at new Leicester points deduction announcement

West Bromwich Albion’s relegation rivals Leicester City have seen their six-point deduction upheld.

The initial sanction, handed in February, was imposed on the Foxes for breaching EFL regulations during their 2023-24 spell in the second tier.

The East Midlanders would drop into the relegation battle as a result, before results would continue to worsen, leaving Leicester in the bottom three, four points behind the Baggies.

Following their relegation from the Premier League and subsequent decision, Leicester would appeal, though they have recently learned that this will be upheld, keeping them in the bottom three.

The Albion will be breathing a sigh of relief, with James Morrison’s side remaining one of the favourites to go on and secure their survival.

West Brom to breathe a sigh of relief after Leicester decision

While the Baggies have been fantastic since Morrison’s arrival just over a month ago, the threat has always been there when Leicester are considered.

Given the quality on their side, it has felt an inevitability that they would spring into life at some point – something that has just not quite happened, even following the appointment of Gary Rowett.

As of now, the Foxes sit in the drop zone, level on points with Oxford.

Jumping back out towards safety with six more points could have changed the course of the season, providing a big confidence boost amid the ongoing survival battle.

Instead, they remain behind West Brom, who have to be considered one of the favourites to go on and claim their spot at this stage.

West Brom are in control of their own destiny

Unbeaten in six matches since Morrison’s arrival, Albion have turned things around magnificently.

However, something completely out of their control impacting the course of the campaign would have been disastrous. Now with five to go, Morrison’s side remains completely in control of their own destiny.

The pressure is on those behind the Baggies, with matches quickly running out for both Leicester and Oxford.

There is a tough test coming up at The Hawthorns, with promotion-chasing Millwall making the trip, but points on the board from matches against Southampton, Hull and Wrexham show that the Black Country outfit are more than prepared for these types of matches.

The next goal is to keep pace, with West Brom now in control of their own destiny, while the pressure is on Leicester to sort their own escape, just a year after their relegation from the top-flight.
