Richard Keys calls out Premier League over Man City delay as West Brom face charge – ‘Absolute joke’

Richard Keys has once again hit out at the Premier League over their delayed Manchester City outcome amid news that West Bromwich Albion now face a charge.

West Brom are said to have breached financial rules in the 2024-25 campaign, which could land the Baggies a points deduction this season in the worst-case scenario.

Leicester City and Sheffield Wednesday, two of the three sides occupying a relegation spot at the bottom of the Championship, have been hit with deductions this season.

Everton were another high-profile example of points being docked, this time in the Premier League, as they fell foul of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) in recent times.

With serious concerns over West Brom’s finances once again, broadcaster Keys had his say in his weekly online blog.

West Brom await further news on possible points deduction

The news first reported via The Telegraph’s John Percy on Monday that West Brom face a potential points deduction was a serious bombshell.

Just when it looked as though Albion had turned a corner under interim boss James Morrison, supporters got a fresh slap in the face.

It is worth pointing out that West Brom have insisted they have complied with the financial regulations, leaving fans somewhat in limbo as they await a new update one way or another.

For now it is all hearsay, but Keys has used the news as a chance to take another dig at the Premier League’s delay over the Man City case.

City face 115 separate charges regarding alleged PSR breaches, with news of that emerging over three years ago now.

“How the hell can City be ready to spend £65m on Elliott Anderson? Three years on from 135 charges relating to financial irregularities they’re still spending. It’s nonsense. An absolute joke,” Keys wrote.

“The PL should be ashamed. Oh – and West Brom are on a charge now, in the same week Leicester’s appeal failed. Why don’t the rules apply to City the same way as they do to every other club?”

What do we know about possible West Brom points deduction?

Reacting to the news on Monday, Dale Johnson, a rules analyst for BBC, provided some clarity on the situation.

Johnson outlined how Albion could be handed a three-point penalty if the West Midlands club are £2million over the limit, or potentially a four-point penalty if £4m over.

There are mitigating factors to take into account, while there have been suggestions Albion will push for any punishment to be carried over to next season if they are found guilty.

Again, though, supporters are left in the dark. All Morrison and his players can do is get as many points on the board as possible before an outcome is reached.

To see the Baggies relegated to the third tier due to poor handling of finances from those high up at The Hawthorns really would be sickening.
