Jayson Molumby: West Brom midfielder has chance to show leadership qualities for Ireland

Jayson Molumby has captained West Bromwich Albion in the past, and with captain Jed Wallace set to leave upon his contract expiry, the leadership team will need an expansion.

It is likely the honour of skipper will be handed down to vice-captain Alex Mowatt, but nonetheless, James Morrison will need a strong core of leaders at the Hawthorns.

The Irishman’s experience of leading out the B71 outfit will no doubt play into any decision over whether he is ready to step up to the plate as one of the bigger leaders of the squad.

Molumby is one of the more experienced players currently for West Brom, having played 181 times throughout his spell so far.

However, he will have the chance to showcase his qualities as a leader for West Brom next season, with an audition for his nation, the Republic of Ireland.

How Jayson Molumby has leadership audition for Ireland

Molumby has been called up for the Republic of Ireland’s friendly match against Grenada. It is an international camp with the purpose of giving plenty of young Irish talents a chance to shine for their nation.

However, manager Heimir Hallgrimsson has also called up a few more experienced players, such as Molumby, to help out the less experienced members.

Out of those called up, Molumby is the fourth most capped player for the Republic of Ireland.

This means Molumby will have to play an important role in helping many of the squad settle into international life, with nerves certain to be involved.

How the 26-year-old steps up to the plate could be a sign of things to come at the Hawthorns, and whether he can be part of any future leadership group.

West Brom goalkeeper Max O’Leary also has plenty to gain for Ireland, as with his short-term deal in the Midlands expiring, he can put himself in the shop window.

Jayson Molumby turned West Brom career around under James Morrison

For much of the season, Molumby was a point of frustration for West Brom supporters, but like many when Morrison arrived, his performances drastically improved.

The midfielder is likely to play a key role next season, with his experience at the international level a real asset for the Baggies.

Despite Ireland not making the World Cup, the 26-year-old was one of the better players on the pitch when their dreams of making the tournament ended.

A good showing against Grenada, as well as a likely call-up for the later May and June internationals could be an excellent end to the season for the Baggies star.
