West Brom have made error in their statement on EFL points deduction – but fans are happy anyway

West Bromwich Albion have decided not to appeal against their EFL points deduction.

The league organisers docked the Baggies two points in April after breaching profit and sustainability rules.

This came despite The Hawthorns outfit denying the allegations that they had exceeded the £39million loss limit for three seasons.

A two-day hearing from an independent panel judged that the threshold had been exceeded, so the punishment stood in the Black Country.

Questions have loomed about whether West Brom would appeal the EFL’s point deduction, but their latest statement only raises further inquiries despite general fan positivity.

West Brom make error in appeal statement after points deduction

There were fears at one point that losing two points could affect the Championship relegation battle.

Luckily for the B71 outfit, James Morrison had already managed to turn the tide, and safety was already on the agenda with time to spare.

That allowed the Baggies to finish four points clear of the drop zone, even with the points being removed from their overall tally.

Missing out on League One has influenced West Brom’s decision not to appeal, as outlined in a statement on Wednesday.

It reads: “The club has decided not to appeal. The club’s performance on the pitch this season meant a two-point deduction did not affect its final standing, and pursuing an appeal would serve no practical purpose for the club or its supporters.”

That isn’t entirely true, as an extra two points this season would have actually carried Albion up two places into 19th, which would have generated more prize money.

Finishing above Blackburn Rovers and Charlton Athletic would have brought in a bigger fee, although it’s unclear by how much that would be.

West Brom have now answered questions over the points deduction and have left many fans pleased in the process.

The idea that the Baggies could have landed more prize money if any appeal had been successful does come with a caveat.

Any additional money from league placement would probably be caught up in any legal costs, so the B71 hierarchy has likely come to the best decision.

That is the general feeling throughout the Albion fan base, with one supporter taking to X, writing: “Correct decision, we all just need to move on.”

Another was pleased by the statement: “What a professional and excellent response/statement. My club, leading by example.”

The general feeling at The Hawthorns is summed up by the phrase in the initial statement, “Settled it on the pitch.”

West Brom used that term after their goalless draw with Ipswich Town, which ultimately sealed their place in the Championship despite the issues a points deduction caused.
