West Brom board member calls for Gianni Infantino leadership change at FIFA

Former West Brom striker Jason Roberts has joined growing calls for Gianni Infantino to be ousted as FIFA's president.

Roberts, 48, joined the Baggies board as a non-executive director back in April and also holds roles within CONCACAF and FIFA.

For the last three years, he's been the Chief Football Development Officer for CONCACAF, the North American football federation, as well as being a member of FIFA's Players' Status Committee and FIFA Legends Programme.

Although it was England's second best World Cup performance of all-time, the 2026 edition in North America will largely be remembered for questionable hydration breaks and a half-hour half-time in the final.

Off the pitch, Iran were forced to stay outside of the USA in between matches, Somali referee Omar Artan was denied entry to officiate games and the cozying up to former Home Alone actor Donald Trump has been nothing but a sickening side show.

Roberts, the nephew of late Albion great Cyrille Regis, has now made his position on the FIFA president's future abundantly clear.

Although many West Brom fans see Roberts as just a former Baggies striker, his role since his playing days has been quite a big one in North American football.

And him speaking out about Infantino's leadership, albeit indirectly without naming the Italian-Swiss-Lebanese president, will no doubt make waves among CONCACAF and potentially FIFA.

"As players, football has given us everything, and we have given our lives to it," Roberts said on Instagram.

"Between us, we have played on its greatest stages and worn our national shirts with pride. But we know that none of our achievements would’ve been possible without the fans, whose passion and commitment is the foundation of this game.

"We share the exact same concerns as the millions of fans around the world. Like them, we have watched the game we love drift away from its core values under FIFA’s current leadership.

"For too long, we’ve seen major decisions taken without players being consulted or considered, and without any regard for the fans who sustain the sport.

"Change is necessary. Power has blurred the current leadership’s ability to distinguish between its own interests and what is best for football.

"Recent events have made silence impossible.

"Enough is enough."

Roberts is far from the only prominent figure to have questioned Infantino's position.

The Football Associations of England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland have all withdrawn their backing for Infantino's re-election as FIFA president.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has also been among the vocal critics of Infantino, especially after he tried to sell the World Cup to private investors.

All 55 UEFA members rejected that proposal, which they called a "victory for the whole game".

CONCACAF were also critical of that proposal, but it remains to be seen what nations with North America, Central America and the Carribbean will still indivually support Infantino.
