John Hughes has mocked Celtic after Mikey Johnston scored a sublime solo goal for West Brom against Coventry City on Friday 1 March.

The 24-year-old signed for the Baggies on loan from Celtic Park during the January transfer window and has been an instant success at The Hawthorns, netting three goals in his last five appearances.

Clearly critical of the choice to loan Johnston out, and Nicolas-Gerrit Kühn being brought in from Rapid Wien, Hughes hit out at the Hoops via his personal X account.

Reacting to Johnston's goal via X on Friday (1 March), Hughes wrote: "That's a tremendous finish at any level. Thankfully, we have Kühn," followed by a wink and angel emoji.

Mikey Johnston hits the ground running at West Brom

Johnston has been an incredible signing since joining from Celtic in January, with already three goals to his name after seven appearances.

His goals against Cardiff City and Coventry came within the first seven minutes of the matches, while his effort against Plymouth Argyle hit the back of the net just five minutes after replacing Andreas Weimann.

There is no underplaying how vital the loanee could be to Carlos Corberan's side in the run-in to the end of the season, with the Baggies aiming for a playoff spot and the chance at Premier League promotion.

The winger's permanent transfer should also be something the club are considering, especially after Shilen Patel's takeover at The Hawthorns, which should gift more funds to Corberan to play with.

The Spaniard has already done an incredible job with the current squad, lifting West Brom to fifth place on a very limited budget, mostly turning to loan players to provide freshness and danger to the team.

Johnston has certainly been one of the best January loan transfers in the Championship this season, and Hughes has every right to be annoyed that his former club chose an inexperienced German winger over the in-form Irishman.
