Don Goodman delighted at West Brom transfer news amid Okay Yokuslu latest

West Brom News Speaking to Don Goodman

West Brom News is delighted to have Don Goodman joining its team of Albion experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the Baggies between 1987 and 1991, scoring 60 goals in 140 league appearances to make him one of the most prolific strikers in Hawthorns history. Goodman also played for Bradford, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Now, Don has agreed to join West Brom News and we're absolutely thrilled to share his expertise on the Baggies every week.

Don Goodman says bringing in a new partner for Alex Mowatt is "key" for West Brom after the midfielder agreed a new deal at The Hawthorns.

Albion confirmed on 1 July that Mowatt had put pen to paper on a two-year deal following the expiration of his previous contract a day earlier.

Okay Yokuslu has been strongly linked with a move away from the club this summer [Fanatik], meaning a replacement will have to be brought in.

Malian midfielder Ousmane Diakite has been signed on a free transfer, but the Baggies may well look to bring in another player in that area.

Discussing Mowatt's new deal in an exclusive chat with West Brom News, Goodman said: "He's a very neat and tidy player who is coming off probably his best season for the club last season, which is why he was offered a new contract.

"He did that in tandem with Okay Yokuslu - they were a real solid pair in the hub of the West Brom midfield. He's calm and composed on the ball, plus he has a wand of a left foot from set-pieces.

"In reality, there's no problem with keeping hold of Mowatt - it's more about who you now bring him alongside him. That is the key for West Brom in how they get the most out of him.

"He's not the most mobile of players, but technically, and with his vision, he's a hardworking lad who I have no qualms about West Brom keeping around. I'm pleased he's accepted it and the best years of his life are probably around about now."

Alex Mowatt new contract a big positive for West Brom

Given the large number of player exits on the back of last season's impressive campaign, it was imperative Albion persuaded Mowatt to pen fresh terms.

As Goodman says, Mowatt is coming off the back of a very good season for the Baggies and he will play a key role again next season.

Should Yokuslu indeed move on - and that is looking the case at this stage - Albion need to get their recruitment spot on.

Diakite looks as though he will be a promising addition to the squad, but he is very much an unknown quantity.

Carlos Corberan has showed he is capable of getting every last per cent out of every player, and that will hopefully be the case with whoever partners Mowatt next season.
