Don Goodman makes Mikey Johnston claim at West Brom after move from Celtic

West Brom News Speaking to Don Goodman

West Brom News is delighted to have Don Goodman joining its team of Albion experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the Baggies between 1987 and 1991, scoring 60 goals in 140 league appearances to make him one of the most prolific strikers in Hawthorns history. Goodman also played for Bradford, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Now, Don has agreed to join West Brom News and we're absolutely thrilled to share his expertise on the Baggies every week.

Don Goodman believes there is no reason for concern about Mikey Johnston despite the West Brom attacker having registered just one goal contribution this season.

Johnston was flying in the Championship during his loan spell from Celtic last campaign in which he registered eight goal contributions in 18 games, but he has been accused of going AWOL this season.

The winger has just one assist in 14 appearances heading into Sunday's (8 December) encounter against second-placed Sheffield United, in which changes are expected.

However, Goodman exclusively told West Brom News he doesn't see any reason for concern just yet.

He said: "Ultimately, it's a new season. It's a team that apart from the first, what, six games where he wasn't playing, this team hasn't functioned as an attacking force and that's why ultimately he's been unable to contribute.

"So Mikey wasn't really getting a game and his season hasn't really got going. Now in terms of starting, I would expect if he continues to be starting that you'll see him get up to speed and get up to that match sharpness which obviously we all saw at the back end of last season, which was scintillating."

"So I don't really have any worries. I just think he's a player searching for sharpness in a team that's misfiring a little bit."

Mikey Johnston can still contribute for West Brom

There is no doubting the level of ability Johnston possesses; the only question that remains is how Carlos Corberan can get him back to the levels of last season.

West Brom need to improve offensively for creative players to be able to shine, of which they have several and their performances could prove crucial to any promotion hopes.

With that said, if there's one man capable of turning things around for the Baggies, it is Corberan and recent links to Wolves could prove detrimental.

The Spaniard has done a remarkable job at the Hawthorns and will undoubtedly paly a big role in the resurgence of form for Johnston going forward.
