George Campbell reveals what James Morrison told him before West Brom captaincy
George Campbell is now officially the new captain of West Brom.
The American only signed for the Albion last summer, but he has proved himself as a top Championship player.
He made 39 appearances last season in the league, and played a pivotal role in keeping the Baggies in the second tier.
He was thought to be a contender for the vacancy left by Jed Wallace's departure, alongside Alex Mowatt.
The midfielder left for Derby, though, and that apparently made it an obvious choice for James Morrison.
The defender has now given insight into what his manager told him about taking on the armband.
What did George Campbell say about West Brom captaincy?
Campbell has now opened up on the decision and how he was named as the Baggies' skipper.
It came hours before the 2-1 win over Norwich on Saturday, opening the Championship season with a bang.
Speaking with CBS Sports Golazo in his homeland, he said: “It was pretty brief to be honest.
“The person who was going to be club captain left a day before, transferred out of the club.
“We were on our way to Norwich, and the gaffer pulled me and said he thinks I’m best suited for the job.”
It shows that the boss shares the opinion of the fanbase and his teammates that the 25-year-old is capable of stepping up and taking on the responsibility.
It may just be a matter of keeping him around now, so that he can have the best possible impact on the side.
Do West Brom have to worry about losing Campbell?
Campbell was attracting interest from Scottish champions Celtic earlier in the summer, sparking exit fears at The Hawthorns.
The Glasgow side were understood to be chasing a £2.5million deal for his signature, but were met with firm resistance from the Black Country outfit, who did not want to sell.
If he has another campaign like his previous, with the added pressure of the armband, then it will likely bring plenty more suitors next summer.
He is contracted until 2029, so Morrison's side have control over his future, to an extent, but if an offer that was too good to be true came in, they may have to make a decision.
Perhaps, signing him to an improved contract that reflects his importance to the squad may be the correct move, as it would make it even harder for him to be poached away.
They need to do everything that they can to keep him in the West Midlands for as long as possible, and promotion would surely be the best idea for that.
