How Jayson Molumby may have strengthened Ireland place despite poor cameo from West Brom star
West Bromwich Albion's Jayson Molumby had an evening to forget for the Republic of Ireland.
The midfielder had been an ever present figure in Heimir Hallgrimsson's Ireland side, but against Austria he was dropped to the bench.
In a highly controversial contest between Ireland and Israel, the Baggies man was among the top performers.
So, this decision was simply to rest his legs on Thursday, rather than punish the midfielder for a poor display.
However, after coming onto the pitch as a substitute, Molumby struggled to have the same impact that he typically has.
Playing a negatively decisive role in Ireland's collapse from a 2-0 lead to draw at the Aviva Stadium against Austria.
How Jayson Molumby change negatively impacted Ireland
Ireland looked to be in cruise control against Austria, holding onto a lead against the central European nation.
However, when Hallgrimsson made the decision to send Molumby onto the pitch in the 63rd minute, the context of the match quickly shifted.
The West Brom midfielder, who is typically excellent on the ball, was far from his usual self.
And then in the 72nd minute, the poor display would open the door to Austria's comeback.
While it was not Molumby's error that ultimately led to the goal for Ralf Rangnick's side, the Irishman failed to deal with the ball in the box, passing it straight back to the opposition team.
It was a moment where he showed a lack of composure, which showed through the fact Molumby completed just five of his eight passes - a 62 per cent completion rate, as per FotMob.
His off the ball work was top, winning four out of five of his duels, while also relieving pressure by picking up two fouls.
However, that simple moment where he struggled to deal with a pass into the box properly was the defining factor of his 27 minute cameo.
Why Molumby performance strengthens case to start despite poor cameo
If anything Molumby's poor performance proved that the midfielder is much better when given the chance to start.
He has been sublime for the Irish national team over the international break so far, with this display an off day for the Baggies man.
Another contentious clash against Israel now looms for Molumby, who will now be hoping for the chance to repeat his last performance against them.
