James Morrison reveals text message from Sam Allardyce ahead of West Brom clash vs Wolves

James Morrison continues to seek advice from his former managers as he looks to continue building upon an impressive start to life in the West Brom hotseat.

After keeping the Baggies in the Championship last season as interim manager, Morrison won the manager's job on a permanent basis.

Seven games into the 2026-27 campaign, Albion are fourth in the Championship, level on points with first-placed West Ham and with just one defeat to their name.

Morrison's gone from strength to strength, and it seems that his contacts list is helping play a major role in that.

West Brom make the short trip to Molineux on Sunday to play against Wolves for the first time in the league since 2021.

Sam Allardyce was in charge of the two games in 2020-21, when Albion won at Molineux and held Wolves to a draw at The Hawthorns, and he's the latest ex-Baggies boss to get in touch with Morrison.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Morrison revealed some of the secrets behind his brilliant start to life as a manager.

It's well known that the former Baggies midfielder spoke to a number of his old bosses at the start of his time in charge at The Hawthorns.

And it seems he's continued to do that, with Allardyce being in touch with him recently.

“The biggest thing for me is that I can still pick up the phone and speak to them. I’d be stupid not to," Morrison said, when talking about Roy Hodgson, Tony Pulis and Steve Clarke.

"I’m just starting out and need all the help I can get.

“I’ve had plenty of conversations with them all. I had a nice text off Sam Allardyce the other day.

"I take all the advice I can, but try to be my own man, too.”

Morrison's Black Country Derby record

Morrison is about to join a small list of people who've both played in and managed in the Black Country Derby.

Ronnie Allen and Bobby Gould have previously done it, but Morrison's history in the fixture as a player can already serve as a comfort for Baggies fans.

Out of his 341 appearances in all comeptitions for West Brom, Morrison played only five times against Wolves.

He won three of those games: his first in a 1-0 win at Molinuex in 2008, a 2-0 home win at The Hawthorns in 2011 and, famously, the 5-1 win at Wolves in 2012 when he assisted two goals.

Morrison has slso played in a 1-1 with Wolves in 2011, when it was his shot that ended up calling to Carlos Vela to score a last-minute equaliser.

The ex-Scotland international has played in one defeat, though, which was a 3-1 loss at Molineux in May 2011.
