John Mousinho's chances of being handed the West Brom job have been boosted.

The Baggies are looking for a new manager after sacking Tony Mowbray on Easter Monday (21 April) after a dismal run of five wins in 18 matches.

Albion slipped out of the playoffs under the 62-year-old's watch and Shilen Patel needs to get the next appointment right.

The Portsmouth manager would be a popular appointment as he is a young and exciting candidate for the role.

Mousinho takes a step closer to West Brom job

Albion are searching for their third manager within a four and a half month period since Carlos Corberan left for Valencia on Christmas Day.

Mousinho has emerged as one of the leading contenders after guiding Pompey to safety, according to the latest bookmakers' odds.

Mousinho has been made the joint-favourite at odds of 2/1 with Bet Victor alongside former Manchester United and Wales coach Eric Ramsay.

Former favourite Ryan Mason is 4/1 to take over at The Hawthorns, with QPR boss Marti Cifuentes ranked at 5/1 for the vacancy.

Russell Martin and Steve Cooper are both outsiders at odds of 12/1 to take over at the Black Country club.

West Brom should hire Mousinho

While he is a young manager, unlike Ramsay, Mousinho has experience taking charge in the Championship at the very least.

He has also won promotion before, taking the Fratton Park outfit up from League One in the 2023-24 campaign and has shown that he can work with a budget which could benefit the Throstles in their push for the Premier League.

Iconic commentator Ian Darke told Pompey News (2 May) that the 39-year-old would interest the Baggies due to a "very good" spell on the South Coast in his first managerial role.

Patel and Co seem to be looking in the right direction, a shift from the process that saw Mowbray reappointed to oversee a disappointing end to the campaign.

Mousinho would excite the fanbase as he is an up-and-coming boss and his potential in the dugout is an unknown quanity, it could be very high and the West Midlands club may benefit from that in the long-run.
