Keith Hackett confirms Wolves player effectively cheated vs West Brom

Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Toti breached the rules with his actions late on in Sunday's win over West Bromwich Albion.

That is according to Keith Hackett, who shared his views exclusively to West Brom News after reviewing footage from the game.

The former FIFA referee noticed an incident late on in the Black Country derby at Molineux, which otherwise passed with minimal controversy.

Fer Lopez scored the only goal of the game shortly after half-time to inflict a first away loss on West Brom in this fixture in 15 years.

If not for Max O'Leary, the Baggies could have found themselves multiple goals behind.

But Albion stuck in there and chucked all they had at Wolves late on, leading to the contentious moment involving Toti.

What did Toti do to breach rules vs West Brom

Toti went to ground in the dying embers with a head injury after colliding with Jose Sa.

The Wolves physios were instructed to come onto the field and did just that.

However, Wolves wanted to set themselves for the corner and Toti was back to his feet without receiving any treatment.

Despite that, the rules state Toti should have left the pitch temporarily due to the Wolves staff members coming onto the field.

This is the case even if it is a collision between two teammates.

Former PGMOL chief Hackett confirmed this, saying: "Toti should have left the field of play for a minimum of one minute as a result of this."

The fact the referee and his officials did not act and tell the defender to leave the field was an oversight.

This defeat is a tough one to take, especially given it arrives just ahead of an unprecedented three-way break.

But context is needed. Albion are fifth in the Championship after eight matches.

This is a team that only narrowly escaped relegation last season, remember, so full credit must go to James Morrison.

The rookie manager has worked wonders and he accepted there could be no complaints about the outcome against Wolves.

"We got what we deserved, really. We weren't at our best and we created a lot of anxiety in ourselves," he told BBC Radio WM.

"In the first half we didn't threaten their goal and in the second half we didn't create enough.

"We just weren't brave enough to take the ball under pressure and have that belief to go and attack."

After drawing with Derby County and losing to Wolves, this break may have come at a good time for the Baggies.

Morrison will just hope his players can bounce back with another massive game upon their return to action against Birmingham City on 10 October.
