Tony Brown shocked by ‘terrible’ Molumby incident in West Brom v Stoke
Jayson Molumby's first-half miss from yards out for West Brom against Stoke City was "terrible", Tony Brown has said.
Speaking on commentary for BBC Radio WM (18 January, 3:34pm), Brown was left in disbelief as Molumby blazed wide from barely eight yards out with the Baggies 1-0 down to Stoke on Saturday.
Tony Mowbray's side had put together a slick three-man move in the 34th minute of their clash at The Hawthorns, but Molumby's glaring miss put paid to the opportunity as Albion eventuallty drew 1-1.
Brown said: "I can't believe it. Can't believe it – what a miss! I thought the keeper must've got a touch on that to take it wide, but he's missed it.
"Molumby, what a great opportunity there; a three-man move, he's there just outside the six-yard box on the left-hand side.
"Just picture Tony Mowbray's face there, he can't believe it either – just put it in!
"That's a terrible miss for me – I mean how many yards is he out there? He hasn't even hit the target, he's hit it wide!"
Jayson Molumby miss almost costs West Brom v Stoke
Molumby has been a difference-maker for the Baggies in tightly-fought contests so far this season, scoring the winner against Swansea in their fourth game despite some worrying moments.
However, the midfielder is hardly prolific in front of goal with just two strikes this term, and Mowbray will certainly be keen to see him shore up on his finishing after Saturday's horror miss in the first half.
The firebrand Irishman had been one of the first names on the team sheet for Carlos Corberan, and Mowbray will likely keep faith with him despite his profligacy in front of goal.
Having seen Stoke go 1-0 up just nine minutes into his first match back in charge of Albion since 2009, Mowbray will have been tearing his hair out at seeing Molumby blaze their best first-half chance wide.
Grady Diangana may have popped up to finally get the Baggies back on level terms, but had Molumby stuck his glorious opportunity away, the Congolese's 71st-minute goal could well have been the winner
