West Brom may be feeling positive about their future, but the same cannot be said throughout the Championship.

Football clubs are under increasing financial pressure and must be smarter than ever with how they spend their money.

The Baggies recently announced Ryan Mason as their new manager and are likely to back him in the transfer market.

However, the EFL have now taken action against one of Mason's future opponents ahead of the new season.

Championship club now placed under embargo by EFL

The Championship season did not end that long ago, but there has already been dramatic news on one of its clubs.

There are strict rules that owners must follow if they are to run their clubs in a fit and responsible manner.

Failure to do so will not go unpunished, and that is exactly what has happened to Sheffield Wednesday.

The Owls are now listed as under embargo on the EFL website per Regulation 54.1, which is non-payment to players, as shared by BBC Sheffield journalist Rob Staton (5 June).

Neither players nor staff have received their salaries for May, meaning owner Dejphon Chansiri was charged earlier this week.

This is now the third occasion that the Hillsborough club have been placed under an embargo of this kind since 2023.

DateReason for embargo
October 2023Failure to pay debts to HMRC
October 2024Missed HMRC payments
June 2025Failing to pay player and staff wages
There have been three embargos during the Chansiri era

Chansiri has been an unpopular figure in South Yorkshire for some time, with supporters staging protests against his ownership.

There have been two offers from a US-based consortium to buy Sheffield Wednesday, but they have both been rejected.

West Brom must be shrewd with spending under Mason

Unlike some of their Championship counterparts, West Brom cannot afford to make substantial outlays this summer.

However, that does not mean they can't bring in quality to help Mason achieve a top-six finish next season, at a minimum.

The Baggies will have to utilise the loan market again and could earmark a move for Mikey Moore, who Mason knows from his Tottenham days.

West Brom will believe they have a top coach, and regardless of who they sign, the West Midlands club will expect progress.
