Don Goodman wowed by what he saw about West Brom - 'Crikey'

West Brom News Speaking to Don Goodman

West Brom News is delighted to have Don Goodman joining its team of Albion experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the Baggies between 1987 and 1991, scoring 60 goals in 140 league appearances to make him one of the most prolific strikers in Hawthorns history. Goodman also played for Bradford, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Now, Don has agreed to join West Brom News and we're absolutely thrilled to share his expertise on the Baggies every week.

Don Goodman has bemoaned the lack of creativity at West Brom as questions start to emerge at The Hawthorns.

The Baggies have drawn nine and won only once in their previous 10 games, as doubts start to emerge over Carlos Corberan's side despite going unbeaten.

Goodman was left stunned by the attacking stats of West Brom in the 0-0 draw against Sunderland recently, with Josh Maja needing more support.

Speaking exclusively to West Brom News, he said: "I don't think the problems West Brom are having is because of the lack of a striker.

"I think it's the creators in and around the strikers that aren't really pulling up trees. And when you consider the talent that they've got, the numbers, other than Fellows and Maja, in an attacking sense, are leaving a lot to be desired.

"I mean, crikey, I'm looking at the stats from their 0-0 draw with Sunderland. West Brom had two shots, none on target, two shots, xG of 0.46. And that was, of course, the one that Maja mis-kicked. That was pretty much it.

"So, you know, you could argue, look, that was a decent point away at Sunderland, who were fighting for the top of the table. Or you could say it's so passive. Where is that going to get you come the end of the season, where you really are creating absolutely nothing?"

Carlos Corberan must address creativity issues at West Brom

While their record at avoiding defeat is impressive and provides a good foundation, it ultimately means nothing in the grand scheme of things if the Baggies continue to be inept in the final third.

Corberan's side has scored the least goals of any team in the top 12 of the Championship although have the third-best defensive record in the league.

Those attacking concerns need to be addressed and it is no surprise to see recent transfer links to Leeds United attacker Joe Gelhardt (Yorkshire Evening Post).

Mikey Johnston was electric on loan last season, with eight goal contributions in 18 games in comparison to the one he has mustered up in 14 games this campaign.

It simply isn't good enough for a side with aspirations of finishing inside the top six and Corberan must address it if he is to alleviate some of the pressure on him.
