West Brom: Jayson Molumby may be James Morrison's man after Jed Wallace exit
West Bromwich Albion will need to appoint a new captain with Jed Wallace leaving the club, and there is no better option than Jayson Molumby.
Appointing the next captain will be one of James Morrison’s biggest decisions at West Brom yet.
The role of captain is not simply a mere title but is an honour bestowed on a player that can take his teammates to the next level.
Wallace has valiantly served that role, and that will certainly be missed next season. But now someone must step into his shoes.
Among the West Brom squad, Molumby stands alone as the obvious selection for Morrison for plenty of reasons.
Why Jayson Molumby should be West Brom captain
Molumby has had his ups and downs in the minds of fans, but for West Brom he has been a terrific servant.
The midfielder has been at The Hawthorns since 2021, and he understands what it means to play for the Baggies.
Over the last five years, the Irishman has featured 181 times for the B6 outfit and, more often than not, has been a consistent performer.
Molumby has also captained the Baggies before this season, and at the international level is developing into a leader as well.
The 26-year-old’s work ethic and rate are there for all to see, and he certainly leads by example on the pitch.
However, manager Morrison will know much more about how Molumby is behind the scenes.
Why Alex Mowatt should be snubbed as captain at West Brom
On paper, Alex Mowatt is perhaps the logical captain for West Brom, considering he was vice-captain last season.
However, with the midfielder set to enter the final year of his contract, the Midlands club need to start instilling continuity into the squad.
If the 31-year-old is made skipper, this situation would simply just roll back around to next year, and the same decision would have to be made.
With Molumby, you have a player who is here until at least 2028 and, at 26 years old, is entering the prime years of his career.
He is starting to build those leadership qualities at club and international levels, and now might be the perfect time to hand him the honour.
George Campbell is another option for West Brom, but at 24 years old and just one season in England, it may be too soon for him.
