West Brom have been rejected by former interim England manager Lee Carsley for their managerial vacancy, according to Graeme Bailey.

The report for TBR Football states that Albion had approached the 50-year-old to replace Carlos Corberan after he left for Valencia on Christmas Eve.

However, it is claimed that the former Everton defender who is now back in charge of the nation's under-21 side after his spell with the first-team rejected the Baggies' move.

West Brom ambitious with Carsley approach

While Carsley is thought to be keen on a club management job in the future, it was an ambitious approach from Albion.

His role in the Three Lions set-up and his step up to manager the senior side when he handed debuts to eight players who he had coach in the under-21 side shows that he is willing to promote youth.

That is one of the attributes that the Baggies need in a manager, they have often been accused of letting promising young talents leave rather than offering a path to the first-team.

That is something which John Heitinga offers too, his time in interim charge at Ajax after managing the Amsterdam club's youth ranks has played a key part in developing who he is as a manager.

The fact that the club is going down this route, the exciting young coach that integrates youth into their squad, is a positive as it suggests they want a long-term appointment and will look to utilise their academy.

It is important that the Baggies make the right appointment, they are just a point behind Middlesbrough who occupy the final playoff place and could make it in with a good run in the second-half of the season.
