Matt Gill played a huge role in West Bromwich Albion's survival last season.

James Morrison led the Baggies to a 10-game unbeaten streak before a loss on the final day, which saw his side stay in the Championship.

However, it has been made clear that Gill, who was brought in as his number two at the start of March, played a big role.

Many supporters hoped that he would be back in the role next season, but that looked to be over after his took to social media last week.

Any hope that was remaining may well have been extinguished after a new report on his future.

What is the latest on Matt Gill's future

Russell Martin looks close to being appointed as Leicester manager, and that could have implications for Albion.

A report from the Daily Record on 7 June claims that he has already moved to add Gill to his staff.

The pair have worked together at Swansea City, Southampton and Rangers and that association looks set to continue.

Why losing Gill would be a nightmare for West Brom

Losing Gill is a big deal for Morrison because his experience helped him massively at the back end of the campaign.

Relegation looked to be on the cards after the 2-1 defeat to Oxford United, but his arrival steadied the ship at The Hawthorns.

It coincided with the 10-game win streak that saw the Throstles survive the drop, even with a two-point deduction for financial breaches, that threatened their second tier status.

When he was appointed, Morrison described him as "first-class coach", so to lose a man who the manager spoke so enthusiastically about is not good at all.

Morrison still needs a figure that can have a similar impact, if the reports are true and Gill is set to join his former manager at the King Power Stadium.

The B71 club's worst nightmare may become true if the experienced coach does depart, leaving a huge hole in the backroom staff, that will need to be filled before the new campaign.

There is plenty of change needed in the Black Country, especially in the transfer market, so needing to find a new coach to take up Gill's duties is far from ideal.
