View: Reported bid to quadruple mooted West Brom target's wages should be red flag for Baggies
One of the most intriguing rumours that has emerged involving West Brom in recent months has been the link to Charlton Athletic striker Lyle Taylor.
The 30-year-old has come in for a shed-load of attention over the past week after Addicks manager Lee Bowyer revealed that he was one of three players who have refused to play when the Championship returns later this month.
It is understood that the player will leave The Valley for free when his contract expires at the end of the season, and is unwilling to jeopardise a big money move by potentially picking up an injury over the course of Charlton's final nine games this season.
The Baggies are one of a number of clubs who are said to be monitoring the situation, as per Sky Sports, and are understood to be very much in the race for the hitman.
Taylor has hit 11 goals in 22 outings this season, and scored 25 in all competitions last term.
But according to the Daily Mail, Albion could face serious competition for his services in the coming weeks.
The national outlet report that Galatasaray are willing to quadruple the forward's current wages as they look to lure him to Turkey.
Ultimately, that could price the Baggies out of a move for the player.
That's not to say that West Brom couldn't afford to pay him four times his current wage, especially if they get promoted this summer.
Taylor signed for the Addicks while they were still in League One, and has not signed any kind of contract renewal since then.
But at some point you have to draw a line and ask whether or not he is actually worth such a bumper pay rise.
As recently examined by West Brom News, it's very much arguable that Taylor would be an improvement on the Baggies' current striking options.
But he also has no top flight experience, and at 30, is hardly an investment for the future.
Signing him would be a gamble, and when the stakes are low and there is no fee, it's not a particularly dangerous one.
As soon as his wages start creeping up and up, however, the risk becomes greater and greater.
If Galatasaray are willing to quadruple his wages, that should be a red flag, and we say let them.
