West Bromwich Albion could welcome Conor Townsend back after his spell at Ipswich Town.

The 33-year-old has had a far from ideal spell since moving to Portman Road in the summer of 2024.

After the Tractor Boys were promoted, the left-back made the move to link up with Kieran McKenna's side.

Injury has ruined his spell in Suffolk with an ACL tear in pre-season ruling him out for the entire campaign.

That makes it little surprise that Ipswich have parted ways with the defender at the end of his contract.

Townsend is now a free agent and could soon be on his way back to West Brom.

Luck hasn't been on the Englishman's side since moving to the East Anglian outfit nearly two years ago.

He missed four games in his debut campaign through a thigh injury as he made a total of 10 appearances across all competitions.

They would be his last in Ipswich colours as his cruciate ligament tear over the summer has ruled him out for over 315 days at this stage.

He has missed 49 games for the Tractor Boys and after only signing a two-year deal in 2024, he has now been let go.

Townsend doesn't hold any grudges with that decision and took to Instagram on Monday to wish the Portman Road outfit well.

He said: "Thank you to everyone involved at Ipswich Town for the last two years.

"Missing the full season through injury has been incredibly difficult. I gave it everything to get back fit and play even a small part in the closing weeks. Came close and was training; however, ultimately ran out of time.

"It was made easier by seeing all the boys achieve promotion and I couldn’t be happier for a great bunch of lads and the fans. Wishing you all the best!

" Looking forward to getting back doing what I love next season."

That last line will be one of excitement to various sides, with West Brom surely considering a move to bring him back.

How West Brom could line up next in 2026-27 as rebuild begins with four new signings

Why Townsend swoop makes total sense for West Brom

The defender hasn't played for a year, but could still prove to be a useful option for James Morrison.

Callum Styles has just signed a new deal after a positive season at left-back and would undoubtedly be first choice once again.

Bringing in an experienced deputy could prove to be wise, especially as the Baggies look to have an improved campaign compared to last year.

Townsend made 213 appearances for The Hawthorns outfit previously and could soon add to that if he signs.

West Brom could hardly argue with the deal on a free transfer as they look to build a squad ready to compete further up the Championship table.
