West Brom at work to bring five more summer signings to The Hawthorns as deals underway

West Brom News Speaking to Don Goodman

West Brom News is delighted to have Don Goodman joining its team of Albion experts at the start of 2024. Goodman played for the Baggies between 1987 and 1991, scoring 60 goals in 140 league appearances to make him one of the most prolific strikers in Hawthorns history. Goodman also played for Bradford, Sunderland, Wolves, Motherwell and Walsall in his career and since hanging up his boots, he's been working in the media with Sky Sports. Now, Don has agreed to join West Brom News and we're absolutely thrilled to share his expertise on the Baggies every week.

Don Goodman fully expects West Brom to be working on bringing at least five more players to The Hawthorns before the transfer window closes.

The Baggies have so far brought in Norwegian defender Torbjorn Heggem, Malian midfielder Ousmane Diakite and goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith since the window opened.

Those arrivals offset the exits of a number of first-team players upon the expirations of their contracts at the end of last month.

Albion's squad remains rather thin, but Goodman believes that will change over the coming weeks.

"I'm sure they're already looking, and trying, to bring in replacements," he exclusively told West Brom News. "There's work going on in the background and obviously they really don't want three, four or five players to be arriving when the season has started.

"In an ideal world, now is the time to be bringing players in so they can familiarise themselves with their new environment and team-mates. There's an imbalance currently because nine or 10 players have gone and only a few have come in.

"A lot of the over-30 brigade have been moved on and it was the right time for change. I'm confident West Brom will have all kinds of deals going on behind the scenes.

"The question is whether they can get some of those deals over the line. I'm very confident that, come the end of the window, they'll have another five bodies - possibly more - through the door."

West Brom must ramp up summer transfer business

This was always going to be a hugely important summer for the Baggies in terms of incomings given the number of exits early in the window.

Some star names must be replaced, and it remains to be seen if Heggem and Diakite are up to the task of slotting in.

Should Okay Yokuslu also depart The Hawthorns, amid strong links with Turkish heavyweights Trabzonspor [Fanatik, 9 July], that money needs to be swiftly reinvested into the squad.

Shilen Patel has yet to really dig deep into his pockets, but that will surely have to change the longer the summer goes on.

If five more bodies are indeed going to arrive at the club before the window closes, though, then every supporter will happily accept that.
