What's happened to Nathan Ferguson's career since he quit West Brom?

Nathan Ferguson is a name that will be familiar to West Brom supporters.

The 25-year-old signed for the Baggies youth system at the age of eight, and spent 11 years at The Hawthorns.

Ferguson signed his first professional contract in December 2017, which would run until the summer of 2020.

He played 21 times for Albion's senior side in the 2019-20 season, with one goal and one assist from defence.

His ability to play left-back, right-back or centre-back saw him forge a role under Slaven Bilic in the Championship.

However, he turned down a new contract and departed in the summer of 2020, but it safe to say his career has not gone to plan.

Where did Nathan Ferguson end up after West Brom exit?

Ferguson signed with Premier League side Crystal Palace on a free transfer.

However, his medical found a knee issue which required surgery then he suffered a minor thigh injury, before eventually making his debut for the Eagles in December 2021.

That eight minutes against Tottenham would be his only showing for the South London outfit, as he suffered from Achilles tendon problems in 2022 and they terminated his contract in June 2024.

He spent the 2024-25 season without a club, before training with Portsmouth in the summer of 2025.

However, Pompey boss John Mousinho confirmed that he would not be offered a contract, saying: “Everybody has managed to stay fit and come through pre-season pretty well. It was as simple as that.

“We spoke to Nathan about how the opportunities - in terms of minutes - were now going to go and we wanted him to see what he could explore elsewhere."

League One outfit Reading then took Ferguson on trial in August 2025, and he played three times for their under-21 side that month, but was not offered a senior contract.

What's next for Ferguson after years of misery?

Ferguson has been without a senior club since being released by the Selhurst Park side.

It seems as though it will a difficult task for him to find a new team, given his extensive injury issues and lack of first-team minutes recently.

He may end up calling it a day and retiring from football if he can't secure a contract with a club shortly.

Given that he does seem to have any social media, and has not done any recent interviews, it is difficult to know what his intentions are.

It is a sad tale, but perhaps a cautionary one, sometimes leaving for the allure of more money and greater things can set in motion a negative series of events.

We will never know how Ferguson's career would have went had he stayed in B6, but he may well regret the decision to leave.
