West Brom player takes step towards recovery from injury - reliable journalist

Ahmed Hegazi has taken a “big step” towards being available for West Brom for the first time this season, according to The Athletic journalist Steve Madeley.

The 28-year-old centre-back underwent surgery in the summer to fix a long-standing issue with his ankle and has been on the road to recovery up until his appearance for the Pharoahs this week.

Madeley now claims via his personal Twitter account that Hegazi’s 90-minute appearance for Egypt on Monday suggests that he is not far away from playing club football with the Baggies for the first time since the play-off semi-final defeat to Aston Villa in May.

West Brom have been very impressive so far this season and sit top of the table having played 11 games without Hegazi.

Semi Ajayi and Kyle Bartley have been Slaven Bilic’s centre-back pairing and it will be interesting to see whether or not the Albion boss drops one of them to get Hegazi back into the side or continue to show his faith in a winning formula.

It’s not like either of them have done a bad job in the opening months of the campaign but Hegazi is still one of the best players in the West Brom squad and it could be just as much a risk to leave him out as it would be to drop one of the two mainstays.

The Baggies face Middlesbrough at The Riverside on Saturday and the team news ahead of that match could suggest Bilic’s way of thinking.

In other West Brom news, Charlie Austin has heaped praise on these three Albion players.
