Middlesbrough striker a doubt for clash v West Brom - confirmed
Jonathan Woodgate has confirmed that Middlesbrough striker Rudy Gestede is an injury doubt for his side ahead of their clash against West Brom at The Riverside on Saturday afternoon.
Gestede, 31, has struggled for game-time this season, earning just four appearances off the bench in the Championship since Woodgate replaced Tony Pulis in the dugout over the summer.
However it would seem as though the centre-forward could be forced out of this weekend’s showdown with the Baggies due to a hamstring injury.
“[George] Friend will be three or four weeks. Hayden Coulson will play in the U23s game on Friday night and Rudy has a hamstring issue which we’re looking at,” said Woodgate, as quoted by the Hartlepool Mail.
Britt Assombalonga has been Boro’s first-choice striker this season and it seems as though he is going to start up front against top-of-the-table West Brom on Saturday.
Assombalonga has completed 90 minutes in all but one of Middlesbrough’s 11 Championship fixtures this season, scoring four goals in the process.
Gestede is yet to score this term but due to his limited game-time, that is hardly a surprise.
Although West Brom are first in the Championship standings, they have only kept one clean sheet this season so there is a chance that someone in the Middlesbrough squad could find a way through Slaven Bilic’s defence on Saturday and Assombalonga will no doubt be eyeing up his fifth of the campaign if he starts.
In other West Brom news, Charlie Austin has heaped praise on these three Albion players.
