Exclusive: Phillips makes bold claim about West Brom in final days of transfer window
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Philips has suggested that West Brom would be making signings for the sake of it if they add to their squad before the January transfer window slams shut on Friday.
Slaven Bilic is yet to add to his squad this month but recent reports have suggested that the Baggies are making progress in their pursuit of Sheffield United attacker Callum Robinson [Express & Star].
Robinson, 24, is predominantly a left-sided winger but he also possesses the ability to play as a centre-forward.
Ex-Baggies striker Phillips has claimed that while adding another striker to the squad would not cause any harm, he still isn’t convinced that Bilic needs any new additions before the 11pm deadline on Friday.
When asked if West Brom need new signings, Phillips told West Brom News: “Do you know what, I actually don’t.
“It’s one of those, you talk about every club in the Championship and the Premier League, do you bring players in just for the sake of bringing them in?
“They’ve actually shown, when they’ve been tested with injuries and loss of form, they’ve been able to cope. Of course, there are still a lot of games, a long way to go, only Slaven can answer that.
“You could probably strengthen the centre-half position but obviously you’ve still got Hegazi there as cover.
“I always like to see another striker come in there, just to put a bit of pressure on the other two, keep them on their toes but then again they’re not going to play so it’s a difficult one.
“For me, I think they’re okay as they are.”
West Brom have not won in any of their last six Championship fixtures and in that time they have seen Grady Diangana and Kieran Gibbs struck down with injuries and Matheus Pereira handed a three-match ban.
Pereira will be available once again next weekend but Albion have struggled when Bilic has been unable to name a strongest possible starting line-up.
Robinson has scored just one goal in 16 Premier League appearances since joining Sheffield United in the summer but last season, at Preston, he was prolific from the left-wing, scoring 12 goals in 24 Championship starts.
Although Phillips does not believe West Brom have a pressing concern for new faces, Bilic clearly thinks differently.
In other West Brom news, Albion have been linked with this £12million-rated Tottenham defender.
