Exclusive: Kevin Phillips backs Bilic over reported West Brom interest in 31-year-old

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips is willing to trust that Slaven Bilic is right about Martin Olsson after the left-back was reportedly welcomed to West Brom on trial.

Express & Star journalist Joseph Masi reported on January 13 that Olsson, 31, was set to have a week-long trial at West Brom’s training ground ahead of him potentially being handed a short-term deal at The Hawthorns.

Olsson has been a free agent since the end of last season when his contract at Swansea expired and he has not played a competitive match since December 2018 due to injury.

West Brom have a bit of an issue in the left-back position with Kieran Gibbs only managing nine league appearances this season due to continual injury problems and there are still doubts surrounding the future of youngster Nathan Ferguson.

Conor Townsend has been Albion’s regular left-back in recent weeks but, despite his winning goal at West Ham on Saturday, there have been concerns about his form.

Although Olsson has been out of action for such a long time, ex-Albion striker Phillips still believes that he could be a decent signing at The Hawthorns, simply because he trusts that Bilic would not hand out trials to any old player.

When asked if Olsson would be a good addition, Phillips told West Brom News: “Yeah, well why not?

“I think Slaven has already shown he has an eye for a player so you would certainly back his judgement on any player that comes in on trial.

“If they impress then why wouldn’t you secure their services?”

Olsson may not have played in over a year but he remains a very experienced player in English football having made over 300 appearances in the Premier League and Championship in spells at Blackburn, Norwich and Swansea.

There have not been many updates on Olsson since he started his trial at the Baggies but with the transfer window set to close at 11pm on Friday, there is still a chance that Bilic could hand the Sweden international a deal to help bolster his left-back options until the summer.

In other West Brom news, Albion have been linked with this £12million-rated Tottenham defender.
