'Awful', 'Ineffective' - Some West Brom fans slam 30-year-old despite win v Luton

A section of West Brom fans have taken to Twitter to slam Charlie Austin for his performance in the 2-0 win against Luton on Saturday.

Austin, 30, did not have much luck in front of goal before he was substituted off in the second half at The Hawthorns to be replaced by Hal Robson-Kanu.

The former Southampton striker is Albion’s top goalscorer this season with nine in all competitions but six of those have come off the bench as a substitute.

It would be fair to suggest that Austin is struggling when starting games, but he remains one of the more prolific forwards in the Championship based on his goals-to-minute ratio [Championship Stats].

Although he stands out in that category, stats by WhoScored show that Austin did struggle to stand out against Luton on Saturday.

He had just 28 touches of the ball, which was fewer than what any other player who started the match, on both teams, managed.

Austin had just one shot at goal, which was blocked, and his 61 per cent pass accuracy was nowhere near good enough for someone who was supposed to play as a focal point in the Baggies’ attack.

Slaven Bilic made the correct call to hook him for Robson-Kanu in the second half. West Brom just seem to be a better team with Robson-Kanu up front over Austin, even though the former Burnley striker has more goals this season.

Some fans have made what they thought of Austin’s display very clear on Twitter.

Here is a selection of their tweets:
