Exclusive: 'Underrated' - Kevin Phillips impressed by West Brom ace despite concerning record

We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…

Kevin Phillips has been impressed by Hal Robson-Kanu’s displays for West Brom this season, even though the Welshman is not the most prolific of strikers.

Robson-Kanu, 30, has scored just 16 goals in 118 appearances since joining the Baggies on a free transfer in 2016 but seven of those goals have come this season.

West Brom handed the ex-Reading forward a new contract in October to extend his stay at The Hawthorns until 2021, after which he went on a run of scoring six goals in nine Championship fixtures.

Although the goals have dried up for Robson-Kanu in the last couple of months, he remains an integral part of Slaven Bilic’s plans as Albion aim to win promotion back to the Premier League.

Ex-Baggies favourite Phillips has admitted that for a striker, Robson-Kanu’s record in front of goal is not the best.

However Phillips has suggested that the Welsh international might not get the credit he fully deserves.

“I actually think he’s a really good player,” the former Sunderland man exclusively told West Brom News.

“He’s probably one of these underrated players – of course as a striker you’re judged on scoring goals and Hal, I suppose his record, he’d certainly like a lot more goals than he’s got and certainly the West Brom supporters but he does chip in with some important goals.”

Robson-Kanu isn’t West Brom’s highest-scoring striker this season but he has still been the most effective for Bilic.

Whenever Robson-Kanu plays, Albion just seem to play a lot better.

He has made a great impact when coming off the bench and his hold-up play has been vital in letting attacking midfielders like Matheus Pereira and Grady Diangana get into games.

Charlie Austin may be the big-name striker at West Brom and Kenneth Zohore is certainly the most expensive.

But the man signed on a free transfer by Tony Pulis in August 2016 has been the Baggies’ main man up front this season.

In other West Brom news, fans slammed this senior player for his performance against Luton.
