West Brom will not be signing January trialist – reliable journalist

West Brom will not be signing free agent Martin Olsson after his trial at the club ended, according to Express & Star journalist Joseph Masi.

Olsson, 31, trained with the Baggies during January ahead of potentially earning a short-term deal to provide cover at left-back for the rest of the season.

It was not reported whether the former Norwich left-back’s trial at West Brom had ended and, as he is a free agent, he’s still available for the Baggies to sign.

However Masi has now reported via his personal Twitter account that the Championship leaders will not be offering a contract to the Sweden international.

Conor Townsend’s recent form might have a lot do to with this because the former Scunthorpe left-back has been playing really well lately.

When Kieran Gibbs suffered his latest injury blow in December and doubts continued to surround Nathan Ferguson’s future, there were a lot of fans who were worried about Townsend as he had never really proven he was top-end Championship material in his first season and a half at The Hawthorns.

But, you have to say that in recent weeks, Townsend has stepped up his performances and has become a very reliable left-back, both defensively and offensively.

As for Olsson, this is a major blow for him because it looks as though he could go the whole season without having a club.

Hopefully, for his sake, he is able to win a contract elsewhere.
