Exclusive: Kevin Phillips warns West Brom over loan star if they fail to win promotion
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has warned West Brom that they could miss out on signing Filip Krovinovic if they fail to win promotion to the Premier League this season.
While Championship clubs have agreed that the current season should be completed once football is able to resume, there is still talk about potentially cancelled the entire campaign and starting again.
If that happened then West Brom, who are second and six points clear of third with nine games left to play, would have to start their promotion bid from the beginning.
Part of the reason West Brom have done so well this season is the impact that several loan signings have made.
One of those is Krovinovic, who has become an influential part of Albion’s midfield since the turn of the year.
According to Portuguese news outlet A Bola, the Baggies have already decided that they will table an offer to sign Krovinovic permanently from Benfica in the summer due to how well he’s played lately.
When asked if Albion could miss out on Krovinovic if they fail to win promotion, Phillips told West Brom News: “Unfortunately, these players like the Pereiras, the Dianganas, they’ve shown that they’re good players so Premier League clubs could sniff around and think ‘they could do a good job for us’.
“If they have to go again in the Championship next year then [Krovinovic] is certainly a player [they should want to sign] because he’s shown this season that he can help.
“He’s good in that midfield area. And with Brunty and Gareth Barry, possibly moving on or retiring at the end of the season, then that’s two players that they’ve lost.
“It might be key to secure Krovinovic’s services.”
Krovinovic could be a real asset for West Brom if they, for whatever reason, fail to win promotion to the Premier League.
It remains to be seen how he would perform in the top-flight but a season of getting battle-hardened in the Championship could be what he needs to be able to stand out.
In other West Brom news, this is why Kenneth Zohore still has so much to prove at The Hawthorns.
