Exclusive: Player could submit transfer request at PL club to join West Brom - ex-Baggie
We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has claimed that Grady Diangana could submit a transfer request at West Ham in order to join West Brom permanently.
Diangana, 22, has spent the season on loan at The Hawthorns, playing a crucial role in the club’s promotion bid by scoring five goals and supplying six assists in 21 Championship appearances.
West Ham are currently 16th in the Premier League and are only outside of the relegation zone thanks to their slightly superior goal difference compared to Watford and Bournemouth.
There is every chance that the Hammers are relegated this season and replaced in the Premier League by Slaven Bilic’s West Brom.
However West Ham news site Claret & Hugh has reported that even if the London club is relegated, they will have no intention of selling Diangana to the Baggies, who are reportedly keen on a permanent deal for the winger.
Ex-Albion striker Phillips believes that Diangana might end up forcing a permanent move to The Hawthorns to play in the Premier League, rather than spend another season in the second-tier with West Ham.
“It will be a difficult one from West Ham’s point of view because if they do go down, he’s the sort of player who can thrive in the Championship. He’s been a highlight and he’s one of the top players in the league,” Phillips told West Brom News.
“If he’s your player, you’d be crazy to let him go. You’d use him to try and bounce straight back.
“But, from the player’s point of view, if the club you’ve been at all season gets promoted to the Premier League, you want to play in the Premier League so you can kind of smell an agent getting involved to say ‘I want to stay where I am’. There could be a transfer request chucked in as well.”
We would all love to see Diangana join us permanently once his loan deal does eventually expire but West Brom fans accept that it will be difficult.
Even if the Hammers are relegated and replace in the top-flight by the Baggies, there are bound to be other teams who will want to sign the 22-year-old.
In other West Brom news, Albion are in the hunt to sign this striker who is nicknamed ‘The Tank’.
