‘What’s the point?’ – Morrison responds to reported plan that deems West Brom ‘high-risk’
Clinton Morrison has claimed that fans can be trusted to stay away from football grounds following recent suggestions that West Brom may have to complete some of their Championship campaign at neutral venues.
The Times journalist Martyn Ziegler reported earlier in the week that governing bodies were planning on staging some matches away from certain stadiums to limit the possibility of fans turning up outside and contravening lockdown restrictions.
The reporter claimed that West Brom and Leeds United had been identified as two particularly “high-risk” cases in that respect.
But Morrison has dismissed the prospect of that happening.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, he said: “I think the fans can be trusted.
“Listen, you’re always going to have a few fans that are going to turn up outside the ground.
“But what they have to realise is that once the fans get inside the ground they’re not going to be able to watch the game so most of them will be going home because all the games are going to be shown live on TV.
“What’s the point of going to the ground? I can’t see it. I think a lot of people will respect what the government are saying and will stay away.”
Morrison isn’t the only high profile name to rubbish the idea of fans turning up at grounds either.
North Wales police and crime commissioner Arfon Jones has dismissed the prospect of neutral venues as “nonsense”, and we’re inclined to agree with him.
How is it fair for some clubs to be forced into playing some of their remaining fixtures at neutral grounds on the basis of an assumption?
It compromises the sporting integrity of the division, and insultingly suggests that West Brom fans can’t be trusted.
Either all games should be played at neutral venues, or none should – there can’t be a middle ground on this.
