We’re delighted to welcome former West Brom striker Kevin Phillips as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Hawthorns…
Kevin Phillips has suggested that Tyler Roberts’ move away from West Brom to join Leeds United in 2018 hasn’t quite worked out the way he would have wanted it to.
Roberts, 21, has had a number of injury issues since joining the Whites and has only played 45 times in all competitions over a period of two and a half years.
He’s started 24 Championship fixtures in that time and Phillips believes that the Wales international would have wanted to play a lot more than he has done.
“When you move, at the time, you think it’s the right thing,” Phillips told West Brom News. “Hindsight is a wonderful thing, isn’t it?
“Some people, when they move, they think it’s going to kickstart their career and you think you’re going to get more game-time but, unfortunately, some of these don’t work out. It hasn’t for Tyler.
“Hopefully, when the season reconvenes, he starts playing more football because he’s a good player.”
Roberts made just one appearance for West Brom before he decided to join Leeds in January 2018 and Albion redirected the funds earned from cashing in on the Welshman to sign Daniel Sturridge on loan from Liverpool.
What a waste of money that was.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but what’s to say that Roberts wouldn’t have suffered the same number of injury issues if he stayed at The Hawthorns?
In other West Brom news, an Albion player has been tipped to join Stoke.
