‘Exceptional’ – Journo in attendance v Hull claims West Brom ace is ‘most gifted’ in Ch’ship
West Brom ace Matheus Pereira is the “most gifted” football in the Championship, according to Birmingham Live journalist Joe Chapman.
The Brazilian hit a hat-trick of assists in the Baggies’ 4-2 win over Hull City on Sunday afternoon – a result that maintained his side’s five-point cushion over the play-off places.
The 24-year-old loanee has enjoyed an impressive debut campaign in England, and is expected to join Albion on a permanent basis after triggering an appearance clause that will secure his £9 million transfer from Benfica this summer.
And Chapman, who was in the stands for the win over the Tigers this weekend, has made a bold statement about just how impressive the South American’s display was.
Writing in a piece for Birmingham Live, he said: “This performance reaffirmed my belief that Albion possess the most gifted footballer in the entire division – regardless of what supporters of Leeds United or Brentford tell you about fellow maestros Pablo Hernandez or Said Benrahma.
“Matheus Pereira was exceptional here, as he was in that second half at Hillsborough; he backed that brace up here with his second assist hat-trick of the season.
“Eight goals and 19 assists in 37 appearances in your maiden campaign in English football is quite a return, never mind the bargain deal Albion got, nor the rough treatment he has inevitably received from opposing defenders this term.”
We’d be inclined to agree with Chapman here.
Pereira has been unplayable at times this season, and the fact that he notched three assists yesterday speaks volumes as to the level he is operating at and just how integral he is to West Brom’s promotion hopes.
The Brazilian made eight dribbles yesterday, as per Wyscout – his joint highest tally of 2020 – and there were times when Hull literally couldn’t get near him.
Claiming he is the best player in the division is quite the shout, but when he’s in this kind of form, it’s hard to disagree.
