‘Gift them promotion’ – Jeff Stelling & Phil Thompson predict huge West Brom & Brentford clashes

So, it’s come down to the last game of the season and, after surviving a big scare last weekend, West Brom have their fate in their own hands.

A win against QPR will see us promoted automatically and avoid the lottery nightmare of the play-offs.

West Brom, Brentford or Fulham can all make the top-two so we can’t afford any slips.

Sky Sports broadcaster Jeff Stelling doesn’t believe West Brom will slip up. He’s predicting a 2-0 win for the Baggies and a 3-0 win for Brentford. He thinks Fulham will lose to Wigan.

Writing on the SuperSix website, Stelling said, “West Brom stumbled at Huddersfield and should have been punished. I think they will take full advantage of Brentford squandering their chance and earn a 2-0 win to gift them promotion to the Premier League.”

Charlie Nicholas agreed with the West Brom win but thinks it will be even more emphatic, predicting a 3-0 victory.

He said, “Apart from West Brom dropping points, Brentford will be mentally preparing for the play-offs and they will go into them with an emphatic win against Barnsley.”

He thinks Brentford win 3-0 and that Fulham will beat Wigan.

We always thought we’d have to win the last two games to get promoted, with Brentford appearing unstoppable.

Thankfully, after we opened the door for them, they fell to Stoke and gave us the lifeline we deserve.

Brentford have been brilliant since lockdown but West Brom have been excellent all season and have constantly been in the top-two spots.

It would be cruel if it was snatched away at the death and we’re all too aware of what can happen to teams who slump late, miss out on the top-two and try to get through the play-offs.

Leeds did that last season and crashed out in the semi-finals to Derby County. We can’t afford another season in the Championship.

Put simply, though, if we can’t beat QPR at The Hawthorns we don’t deserve to go up. Nerves will play a part but the players are good enough to get through the test.

It’s going to be a tough one – we’ll be watching through our fingers until we get a two-goal buffer but we’ll take solace from these predictions from the Sky Sports crew.
