West Brom are set to say Sporting Lisbon for Matheus Pereira ahead of schedule, according to the print edition of Portuguese outlet Record.
The Brazilian enjoyed a superb season on loan at The Hawthorns in 2019/20, and featured enough times to trigger a clause in his loan deal that allowed the Baggies to make his transfer permanent.
Albion have already paid just over £450,000 for the loan, and must pay a further £8.5 million to wrap up the deal completely.
It was initially expected that West Brom would pay the rest of that fee at some point before Christmas.
But it is now understood that the financial boost of promotion back to the Premier League will allow the club to pay a significant portion of the amount earlier than initially expected.
Record do not go as far as to state why the Baggies would choose to do so.
The report also claims that while no official announcement has been made about the winger, the deal should be confirmed soon.
This is great news for West Brom.
For one thing, it would seemingly suggest that we are in relatively good financial health, and the sooner that a deal for Pereira is rubber-stamped, the better for everybody.
The wide man was the standout performer in Albion’s promotion campaign, so much so that Whoscored ranked him as the second highest rated player in the Championship last season behind Brentford’s Said Benrahma.
Sky Sports pundit Keith Andrews has admitted that he has been “blown away” by the South American, and all the signs are that he could make a really positive impression on the Premier League next term.
The sooner we hand over the money and make his move official, the sooner we can start to look forward to him wreaking havoc in the top flight.
