West Brom sound out potential freebie swoop for midfielder who quit PL club in June – report

West Brom are among a number of clubs who are interested in signing former Burnley midfielder Jeff Hendrick, according to 90min.

The football news website reports that Newcastle United believe they are front-runners for the 28-year-old free agent’s signature at this stage.

However, Everton, Southampton, Crystal Palace, AC Milan, Atalanta, Lille and Marseille are also interested while the Baggies are said to have “sounded out” a potential deal for the Republic of Ireland international.

Hendrick is available on a free transfer after quitting Burnley in June when he could not agree a new contract with the Turf Moor club.

He’s made 122 Premier League appearances in his career while also earning 54 caps for the Ireland national team.

Sean Dyche must have been gutted to lose the former Derby midfielder on a free in June, especially based on his comments on him in January last year.

As quoted by Burnley’s official site, Dyche said: “We ask a lot of Jeff and some people question him, but he plays all over the place and continues to play hard and do a great job for us.”

West Brom’s central midfield options could do with being improved before next season kicks off in September.

Since winning promotion to the Premier League, Filip Krovinovic’s loan deal has expired and Chris Brunt and Gareth Barry have reached the end of their contracts.

Hendrick is at the prime of his career at 28-years-of-age and has a lot of experience that could come in handy at The Hawthorns.

Unfortunately, it seems that Newcastle are very confident of completing a deal for the Irish free agent as it stands.
